Tuunraq Mask

Challenge piece: Red Cedar gift of and challenged by friend and fellow artist Rick Bartow.

Meaning: This is a functional dance mask and is made from a redwood driftwood burl. It represents a Angalkuq's helping spirit. You can see that the helping spirit is deformed on one side of the face. This is a powerful spirit but it reminds us that if we do have a gift, that we must treat it with great respect and care. If we do not, the teeth symbolize the fact that we will be consumed for the rest of our lives for anything bad that we did with our gifts.

"True Relics"

Challenge piece: Old Growth oak gift of and challenged by friend and fellow artist Rick Bartow.

Dimensions: 20"w X53" H X 12"D

Materials: Old growth oak, Myrtle wood, Raku, High fire porcelain, Ivory, recycled mink fur, sealskin, red yarn, granite base, wild turkey feathers, glass beads, driftwood, and artist acrylic paints.

Meaning: This is a traditional Shaman wearing their wolf mask and helping spirit as a guide on their head. They are sharing the true gift of the Yup'ik spirit in their songs and stories. The symbolic relic on the front represents the true Yup'ik relics (traditional knowledge)  which are contained within our old spirits who are beginning to return to us. In the eyes of our youth, you will see the true relics come back through their hearts and souls. It symbolizes my belief that our healers and spiritual peoples are returning. That when they do return, they will be much stronger and more powerful then ever before.
